Notice regarding the registration of buildings in Shinsenkyo as cultural properties
On March 6, five buildings—Sangetsu-an, Nikko-den, Hakone Museum of Art Main Building and its Annex, and Rest Area—in Hakone Shinsenkyo were registered as Japan’s Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
With this registration, there are now six nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Properties (buildings) in Shinsenkyo, including Shinzanso (registered in 2001).。
The Hakone Town Board of Education of Kanagawa Prefecture, which submitted its opinion to the Council for Cultural Affairs last fall to register the five buildings as Tangible Cultural Properties, described them as “important elements of Shinsenkyo – Place of Scenic Beauty and were built to introduce Japanese culture to a wide range of visitors to Shinsenkyo according to their individual characteristics; including the Sangetsu-an Tea House, which is used to learn about Japanese culture and architecture, the main building and annex of Hakone Museum of Art, which showcase some of Japan’s finest works of art, and Nikkoden, where traditional Japanese performing arts and entertainment are presented.
